Field Operations Responsibilities
The Field Operations Bureau of the Sheriff’s Office encompasses the patrol division, Parish Courthouse security, Community Outreach, the sheriff’s SWAT or Special Weapons and Tactical team, school resource and truancy programs including the D.A.R.E. drug awareness program for school children.
The Patrol Division, as well as responsible for regular patrol of streets in St. Bernard Parish, handles all calls for assistance including emergencies, reports and investigation of crimes in progress or crimes discovered, reports of injuries and handles all special events including parades, fairs and protection of any visiting dignitaries.
Courthouse Security includes screening the public for weapons and handling all other forms of security for the judges and the public attending sessions in court.
School Resources and Truancy Programs includes officers assigned to schools and working in outreach programs and handling truancy issues including enforcing laws requiring both children attend school and parents of juveniles meeting the responsibility of sending them to school.
The D.A.R.E., or Drug Awareness Resistance Education, program has been re-started in St. Bernard Parish schools for the first time since Hurricane Katrina and delivers an anti-drug message based on the principle of self-confidence and self-respect as a means to resist peer pressure.
Field Operations Bureau is commanded by Maj. Mark Poche, a 25-year veteran of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office and native of the parish who is also head of the sheriff’s SWAT Team.
Poche is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
